Concert recording: Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances op. 45
Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich present Rachmaninov's last work.
"They are my last spark", said Sergei Rachmaninov about his "Symphonic Dances". He composed them as his last major work in exile in America in 1940 - with an unmistakable longing for his Russian homeland. the three opulently scored movements were originally entitled "Noon, Dusk and Night" and are also about the phases of Rachmaninov's own life: in the first movement, for example, he used a quote from his Symphony No. 1; the third combines the melody of the "Dies Irae", which he repeatedly used, with the "Hallelujah" of Russian Orthodox church music.
In this performance, Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich let this "last spark" fly - from the throbbing start through all the energetic and lyrical musical ideas to the final gong and timpani beat.
