How much autobiography is there in Dmitri Shostakovich's music? Where and how are his experiences with Stalin's regime reflected? These questions are still being discussed today, and his 15 string quartets in particular provide a variety of answers: bitter, grotesque, lyrical, quiet. 50 years after the composer's death, the Jerusalem Quartet is performing all of these string quartets in a two-part cycle - after the first nine, which were performed last January, the quartets no. 10 to 15 will now follow.
