It took Robert Schumann just four days to compose his first major orchestral work - Symphony No. 1, also known as the "Spring Symphony". The title refers to a letter from the composer in which he wrote that the work was created "in that springtime urge that carries people into old age and overtakes them anew every year". The spirit of optimism was also meant musically: the work led out of Beethoven's shadow and into a new symphonic world of its own.
