The "Concerto for Orchestra" is one of Béla Bartók's most popular works - and it shows how much creative energy the composer, who was already seriously ill and plagued by financial difficulties, was able to unleash. After emigrating from Hungary to the USA, he had not composed anything for over two years, and now, in just three months, he created a work that was about the whole: about the whole orchestra, as the title suggests, but ultimately also about life itself. The music tells of grief and liberation, of struggle and play, of longing and irony, of false operetta bliss and genuine folk music. It not only offers a variety of instruments soloistic development opportunities, but also summarises everything that makes up Bartók's art. Yet it is by no means overloaded - it is as lively and gripping as only a masterpiece can be.
