Gabriel Fauré Klavierquartett Nr. 1 c-Moll op. 15
Lili Boulanger was only 24 years old, but she had a remarkable career in her short life: in 1913 she was the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome - and not least thanks to her older sister Nadia Boulanger, who tirelessly championed her works, she is now one of the composers whose name regularly appears in programme booklets. Her pieces for piano trio are among the last that she wrote - already seriously ill. Deeply melancholic on the one hand, characterised by a shimmering mood of new beginnings on the other, these works show how colourful and forward-looking Lili Boulanger's compositions were. She learnt her craft from Gabriel Fauré, among others, whose piano quartet will be performed in this concert. Thomas Adès' "Souvenir", the third work in the programme, was written in 2018 for the film "Colette", which portrays another remarkable French woman: The writer, journalist and variété artist Sidonie-Gabrielle Claudine Colette.
