An original work by Gustav Mahler in a chamber music concert? Yes, it does happen. Most of the chamber music works that he wrote as a teenager long before his large-scale symphonies were composed have been lost. But a quartet movement in A minor has survived. It is unmistakably influenced by Brahms' Piano Quartet in C minor, which had been premiered in Vienna shortly before - and which will also be played in this concert. The fact that these works could be created has a lot to do with Mozart. He was commissioned by the publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister to write three piano quartets, but was then released from the contract after the first one: The work was too difficult for music lovers, it was said, and therefore could not be sold. In fact, Mozart developed the form of the piano quartet in a new, more sophisticated direction here, which inspired later composers - and has remained attractive in high-calibre performances to this day.
