A year ago, Philippe Herreweghe brought Bach's "St John Passion" to the Grosse Tonhalle - now he is taking on the "St Matthew Passion". The work has been with him for decades; he recorded it in 1985 and 1999. Soprano Dorothee Mields and countertenor Alex Potter will be returning as last year's soloists. The British tenor Guy Cutting, who regularly works with Herreweghe, will perform as the Evangelist. However, the main roles will once again be played by the choir and orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent: two outstanding ensembles that respond to the smallest gesture of their founder - combining tonal clarity with emotional depth.
