András Schiff has performed with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich several times as a pianist and will now conduct it for the first time. In the first half of the programme, he will conduct piano concertos by Bach and Beethoven from the piano, which he has been working on for decades. He once revealed in an interview that he starts every single day with Bach; he has undoubtedly spent many months on Beethoven as well. The second half of the evening then takes place without a grand piano; András Schiff is "only" the conductor. Instead, his Hungarian compatriot Béla Bartók takes on a double role: as the composer of the "Dance Suite" on the one hand, and as a counsellor in Lutosławski's "Musique funèbre in memoriam Béla Bartók" on the other.
